This specimen was lot 2322 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$495 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''RDR/ÖSTERREICH Ferdinand I. 1521-1564. Taler o. J. (16. Jahrhundert), Wien. Kleine Schrötlingsrisse. Sehr schön-vorzüglich.'' ([[Austria]], Ferdinand I, 1521-64, thaler without date (16th c.). Weakly struck, very fine to extremely fine.)"</blockquote> This particular type is a very early thaler, struck before 1548, and is a product of the Vienna mint. Davenport lists over 130 different thalers for Austria in the sixteen century. This coin is undated but is likely from Ferdinand's tenure as king of Rome (1531-58) but issued before he adopted a beard in 1548.
