This specimen was lot 1168 in Jean Elsen sale 161 (Brussels, March 2025), where it sold for €260 (about US$339 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''ESPAGNE, Philippe II (1556-1598), AR 4 reales, après 1578, Tolède. D/ Écu couronné. À g., •/T/M dans un cercle. À d., ⁰/IIII R/ Armes écartelées de Castille et Leon dans un polylobe. Belle patine.'' (kingdom of [[Spain]], Philip II, 1556-98, silver four reales, struck after 1578, Toledo mint. Obverse: crowned arms, mintmark and assayer initials at left; reverse: the quartered arms of Castile and Leon in a polylobe. Nice patina, Very Fine.)"</blockquote> This type was struck at several mints late in the reign of Philip II, about the same time as the Segovia mint was experimenting with milled coins. This type is from Toledo and was probably struck prior to 1590, when dates were added. Assayer M is listed for 1590-93, sometimes within a circle, sometimes not.
