Malta was granted independence by [[Great Britain]] in 1964. Coinage was not inaugurated until 1972, when the republic was inaugurated. The obverse features a bust of Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons. This type was struck 1972, 1976-82. In 1982, one Maltese pound = US$2.45. Malta has since joined the EU and adopted the euro, rendering the Maltese pound obsolete.
