Wurzburg_1729_goldgulden_obv_H3029-30105.jpg(450 × 453 pixels, file size: 106 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

This specimen was lot 30105 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $5,875. The catalog description[1] noted, "Rare and Sought-After Issue Wurzburg. Friedrich Karl von Schonborn Goldgulden 1729, S.P.Q.W, KM 294, Fr-3714, Helm-639, AU55 NGC. One-year type. Obv: Lion beneath canopy carrying a medallion of the Prince-Bishop. Franconia approaches from the right with gifts; a tree holding the arms of Wurzburg is behind. Rev: Crowned coat of arms. A gorgeously illustrated "New Year" Goldgulden with attractive glistening fields and eye-catching orange-gold tone. Limited wear is evident and there are no marks to speak of. This rare issue is understandably popular given its intricate and fanciful design. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman / B.G. Johnson."
