Sweden_1599_daler_obv_H3029-30261.jpg(450 × 453 pixels, file size: 89 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

This specimen was lot 30261 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $35,250. The catalog description[1] noted, "Rare and Attractive Carl (IX) Regency Period Daler 1599, Stockholm mint, SM-7, Davenport-8713, MS63 NGC. Struck during the turbulent political times in Sweden when Carl was representing the Vasa ruling family in Stockholm while his brother, Sigismund, was King in Poland. Discord between the Protestants and Catholics weakened the State and eventually broke out as the Thirty Years War. In 1600 Sigismund was forced to abdicate the throne in Sweden and Carl IX became King. This example of the rare Daler struck during the Regency is sharply detailed and most attractive with light silver and gray patina. The obverse features the coat of arms of Sweden while the reverse shows Jehovah in Hebrew surrounded by rays of light."
