Summary

This specimen was lot 193 in Schulman auction 389 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,339 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Hungary - Thaler 1556 KB, Silver, FERDINAND I 1526-1564 Kormocbánya mint. Half-length bust right holding scepter. Rev. arms with eagle, Madonna and Child above. Ex Cherry Tree Collection. PCGS Genuine AU Details. Damage." This subtype is listed for 1556 only. It is very similar to KM MB178/Huszár 913 with damascened armor instead of ribbed armor as shown here, but Davenport lumps them together. The Hapsburg ruler styled himself king of Hungary but actually ruled only a slice near the Austrian border, the remainder being divided between the Ottoman Turks and the prince of Transylvania.
