This specimen was lot 20537 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $8,225. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. Taler (Albertus Ruble), 1753-S/P. Mannheim Mint. Karl Peter Ulrich (Tsar Peter III) (1739-62). PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder. KM-226.1; Dav-1353; Bit-61; Diakov-46; UZD-4929. Struck while Peter III was still heir apparent to the Russian throne. Son of Duke Golstein-Gotorpsky and grandson of both Peter I (The Great) and Karl XI of Sweden. From a mintage of only 1,043 pieces. Designed by medalist Anton Sheffer, hence the "S" under the portrait. The coin was commissioned by Golstein merchant Ioann Ludwig Ploss ("P" under eagle tail) who was a denizen of Kil, a town in southern Germany. A fully original lightly circulated piece that retains nearly all of the design detail. Deep anthracite toning with a glossy blue sheen to the surfaces, especially on the reverse, add to the appeal. A highly desirable issue from a number of different vantage points. An issue that always sees spirited competition at auction; we expect the example offered here to be no exception."
