This specimen was lot 39264 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. 1/4 Tanga (15 Reis), 1886. NGC PROOF-65 RB. KM-30; Gomes-L1.10.03. The only proof example of the coin submitted to the grading services to date. Unlisted as a proof in both Gomes and Krause, and far more RARE than British Indian coinage, this Portuguese Indian coin is in a class all by itself. Eye-popping glossy red obverse surfaces with impeccable details throughout. Just enough tone on the reverse to knock the coin from full red status, but given its other immaculate traits it hardly matters. A must-have coin for collectors inhabiting this European colonial numismatic niche."
