This specimen was lot 1330 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $3,818.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "NICARAGUA. Granada. 1/2 Real, 1824. NGC VF-30. KM-5; Jara-Figure-13; Flores-no.5; Cruz-pg.43. EXTREMELY RARE with only a handful of examples known. A pomegranate (granada) flanked by "J-G" for Junta de Granada (respectively), date of (24) below; Reverse: Mimics that of colonial cob coinage, however the lions in the quadrants are replaced with pomegranates. An exceptional and very important example of this type, as much of the date is visible. Most examples of this type do not contain a legible date, this contributing to past numismatists (including Cruz and Flores) mistakenly attributing this issue to 1823. It was not until 2007 that this type was correctly attributed to 1824 by Carlos Jara in his work on the Central American provisional and provincial mints. Slab incorrectly labeled as 1823. Lightly toned and of good metal quality."
