This specimen was lot 41215 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "The Only Mint State Certified Example, MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1870-Pi PS. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC MS-61. KM-377.12; DP-Pi58. The single finest certified, this example possesses sparkling luster in the fields and traces of faint tone over the surfaces. The strike is sharp and nearly full in the centers with a some softness appearing around the date. A VERY RARE date on account of much of the mintage going to Asia and one of few we've traced that is without chopmarks or evidence of aggressive mishandling. As such, a coin that should be of utmost interest to collectors focusing on Cap and Rays 8 Reales that claim both absolute and condition rarity."
rare date, 1870/69 overdate even rarer.
