This specimen was lot 31335 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $56,400. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Important 1709 Philip V 8 Escudos, A Possible Quasi-"Royal" Presentation Issue. Philip V gold Cob 8 Escudos 1709 MXo-J MS63 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM 57.1, Cal-101. 36 mm/26.8 g. Entirely lustrous and struck on an exceptionally broad flan, thus receiving more of the die's intended design, with a complete shield, mintmark, assayer initial, denomination and full 1709 date, as well as the added bonus of much of the PHILIPPVS name, which is almost never seen. Similarly impressive on the reverse, the central cross is astoundingly bold and complete, each element in its design rising sharply from the fields. This overall quality makes this coin unique in several respects, one way being that no others are known with a complete four-digit date. Additionally, while no "Royal" strikes exist for the notoriously crude 1703-1710 period, this coin is easily the closest in appearance, perhaps being the mint's best attempt at a presentation striking (Quasi-Royal?). Whatever the intention, its existence is a marvel, ranking among other most-important findings from the Plate Fleet's recoveries.
