This specimen was lot 30338 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $4,935. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic Caps and Rays 8 Reales 1859 Pi-MC AU55 PCGS, San Luis Potosi mint, KM 377.12, DP-Pi40 ("Extremely Rare"). The rarer plain assayer variety for this very rare assayer/date combination. Borderline Uncirculated with satiny surfaces and subdued mint bloom. Quite attractive for the grade and well struck. Another key issue of the series in unusually appealing preservation. One of the finest known of this very rare date, and certainly the finest offered for public consideration in the past few years. Securing a comparable specimen may not be possible for quite long after this landmark offering."
