It sole appearance at public sale during the past six decades came when we sold the Colver collection in 1999, where we noted "This bank has always been the stopping place in any collection of "Forbidden Titles," as hitherto there have been no offerings whatever of any examples from this bank. Pen signed and evenly circulated Very Good, with no problems whatever, almost impossible to estimate because when the hammer falls on this unique note, no amount of money can buy another." Our "best guess" estimate at that time was $3000-6000, with the note realizing $6050. Now, more than five years later, that sum appears incredibly conservative for a unique California rarity. In a market where truly desirable material has appreciated substantially since 1999."

Burbank was one of just a handful of southern California locations where Charley Colver, try as he might for over half a century, could not ever obtain even one example. This specimen was lot 17671 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $4,370. The catalog description[1] noted, "Covina, CA - $10 1929 Ty. 1 The Covina NB Ch. # 8222, By far the scarcer of Covina's two issuing banks, with the census from here skewed by the existence of two serial number one Type 2 sheets, neither of which has ever been offered publicly. Only five single small notes are in the census, with the Horwedel collection boasting two of that number. This is the only Type 1 $10 in the census at present. Fine. Ex-Currency Auctions of America's May, 1993 sale, lot 1461."

The catalog description[1] noted, "Covina, CA - $20 1929 Ty. 2 The Covina NB Ch. # 8222, An even nicer example from this just plain rare bank. Although Charley Colver had three small notes from here (no surprise, as Covina was his home town), only one was as nice as this, with that example realizing $4125 over five years ago. Our estimate here may well prove conservative. Very Fine."

The catalog description[1] noted, "Cucamonga, CA - $10 1929 Ty. 1 The First NB Ch. # 7152, Another rare note bearing one of the legendary California town names that collectors have sought for years. While five large and five small notes are recorded in the census from here, virtually that whole number have been unavailable to collectors as most all reside in long term holdings which have not seen the light of day for decades. Our records show only three offerings of any kind from here during the past sixty years, demonstrating just how infrequently notes from this one bank locale have actually been available to the collecting fraternity during that period. Very Good."

The Horwedel collection specimen is far higher grade than all but one of the reported pieces, and is light years superior to the example we sold from here in the California Estate collection in May of 2003, which, despite splits at the folds and holes in the center, realized $3450, more than double its pre-sale estimate of $1250-1800.
