This specimen was lot 32260 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $85,187.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Philip V gold 8 Escudos 1741/0 G-J MS61 NGC, Guatemala mint, KM 7, Onza-212 (same dies), Jara (Historia de la Casa de Moneda de Guatemala, 2007) p. 182 (same dies). Mint State and conservatively graded for this crude issue, with strong luster and highly unusual original surfaces, with crude yet carefully applied milled edge design. A delightful specimen of one of the mythical Spanish colonial onzas, with Jara accounting for a grand total of 11 specimens of all dates combined for the Philip V issue. Jara also indicates (op. cit., page 178) that two pieces of this date were known to him, one of which he plates on page 182. Said piece is struck from the same pair of dies as our presently offered coin. Whether the latter is Jara's 2nd listed example or a third discovery piece cannot be established at this time. On the other hand, we are quite confident in considering the present coin as among the very finest known of this excessively rare type issued under Philip V. As one of the most valuable and iconic Spanish Colonial onzas in essentially unimprovable condition, it should elicit the strongest bidding attention from the collector community."
