This specimen was lot 31048 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Victoria gold 'Roman I' Sovereign 1861 MS64 PCGS, Royal mint, KM 736.1, S-3852D, Marsh-44A. In a word, stunning. If a Victorian gentleman in 1861 found this in his change, he would likely have remarked on how freshly minted it appeared. What he might not have noticed is the 'I' used as the first 1 in the date, making this not only an exceptionally beautiful, but also an extremely rare coin. A startling yellow, with deep, flawless luster touching every surface, light brushing on only the very highest points; the unexpected character in the date stands out boldly and prominently. Offered as part of the celebrated Bentley Collection (Baldwins Auctions, 8 May 2012, lot 90), there listed as the finest known. PCGS shows only one graded higher at MS64+."
m. 7,623,000, a slightly better date.
