This specimen was lot 20390 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1649-N. Montpellier Mint. Louis XIV (1643-1715). NGC MS-62. Dav-3799; KM-155.12; Gad-202; Dr/5-391. Struck at the Montpellier mint and in French, identified as an "ecu a la meche longue". Listed as a common date, this mint is notorious for bad strikes on crummy planchets. This example is an astounding exception, with original toning, no trace of adjustment marks and faint evidence of clashed dies on the reverse. Worthy of a strong premium as such."
