This specimen was lot 20195 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1679-A Paris Mint Louis XIV (1643-1715). NGC MS-64. Fr-425; KM-236.1; Gad-248; Dupl-1430. "louis d'or à la tête virile" from a rather scarce type struck 1675-84. Single finest certified example at either NGC or PCGS. Between the "louis d'or à la mêche longue" (1646-59) and the "louis d'or à l'écu" (1690-93) run a series of rare types, often lumped together as "louis d'or juvénile." This one, showing the Louis XIV with a mustache at the age of 41, shows the king in his prime. Sharply struck, without flaws and highly lustrous."
