This specimen was lot 30741 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $1,177. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XV gold Louis d'Or 1738-C MS63 NGC, Caen mint, KM489.5, Gad-340. From the scarcely-seen mint of Caen, with sun-kissed golden surfaces and an obverse that experiences striated tone in shades of graphite gray. Choice detail is readily noticeable and just a bit of strike softness is expressed in the centers. An engaging piece from all angles and conditionally scarce at this level of Mint State."
