This specimen was lot 440 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,331. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE, Le Gouvernement de la Défense Nationale. 1870-1871. AR 5 Francs (37mm, 25.01 g, 6h). Ceres type. Paris mint; différents: bee and anchor. Désiré-Albert Barre, engraver general. Renouard de Bussière, director. Dated 1870 A. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64. Superb choice brilliant uncirculated with full luster and just a hint of patina. Claims to a higher grade. First year of a two year type. Purchased from A. H. Baldwin & Sons, September 1966."
VG 742; KM 818.1, F.333/1, Dav-93. mintage 1,185,100 (with and without legend) plus 335,609 (Hercules) plus 6,246,264 (Napoleon III). this is the most common 1870-A.
