This specimen was lot 72270 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg. 2 Thaler, 1680-RB. Ernst August (1679-98). PCGS Genuine--Damage, EF Details Secure Holder. Dav-LS233; KM-A269. Fields smoothed as was the practice of some collectors of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. This is thought to have been done in order to enhance their appearance. The smoothing on the present example was done quite a long time ago as the presence of tiny nicks and contact marks in the fields suggest that this piece was handled and saw minor circulation afterwards. Well struck and attractive slate grey tone throughout with a lovely golden honey sheen." 52.3 g, silver, expensive but the most common double thaler. Also triple thaler (Dav-LS232) and quadruple thaler (Dav-LS231).
