This specimen was lot 23074 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro I gold 4000 Reis 1823-R, KM 369.1, Russo-593, MS62 NGC. The first year of issue for the Pedro I 4000 Reis type and one of the more available dates in the series with a mintage of 20,895 coins. That said, Mint State example such as the present are always the target of type collectors, with demand easily surpassing supply. The present coin, both Mint State and pleasing, exhibits a better strike than most with a nearly fully detailed shield on the reverse and an impressively sharp date. The luster remains unimpeded and while light handling is evident, its visual impact is mild at best. All in all, a fantastic coin and a worthy of a premium bid."
