This specimen was lot 23882 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $6,462.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Maria I gold 4000 Reis 1790, KM 225.1, Russo-497, Gomes-26.03, MS63 NGC. 1790 is an interesting date for Brazilian issues as it is rare in most denominations including many silver issues. The first type of 4000 Reis of Maria I are quite scarce (1787, 1790 and 1792) with 1790 being the key of the three. Full strike with beautiful details on both sides of the coin.
