This specimen was lot 30376 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $38,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "George V gold Sovereign 1921-M MS64 NGC, Melbourne mint, KM 29, S-3999, McD-268. Mintage: 240,000. One of the lower mintages of the entire series, and despite this mintage figure typically allowing for an ample number of survivors, it was not so in this case, with melting of much of the original mintage likely being a key contributor to its now well-known rarity. Among the finest to survive, this near-Gem displays bright golden luster within the fields and light tone that clings to the legends, suggesting years of careful storage. Closer magnified inspection confirms the quality, with a few light grazes appearing here and there, but no major instances of contact that degrade the appearance. Presently the single finest example certified at NGC with no others in finer grade at PCGS. As the first example we have offered of this date in any state, exciting for us as auctioneers, and an occasion that is destined to be one of top lots of the entire sale."
