Colombia SB818-40159r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40159 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1773/2-VJ 2 Escudos. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-55 (PCGS). A choice piece with an outstanding provenance. Abundant frosty luster covers both sides, with even light yellow surfaces. A number of raised die artifacts are seen in the right obverse field. A most attractive example of this issue. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Stack's sale of the Amon Carter Collection, January 1984, lot 1215." This type was struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán 1772-84 and is probably the most common two escudos of colonial Latin America.
