Nurnberg (1700)-GFN 1/4 ducat Fr-1892
The first specimen was lot 32889 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $540. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nürnberg. Free City gold 1/4 Ducat Klippe ND (1700)-GFN MS65 NGC. Paschal lamb is portrayed. A stunning small gold coin with every detail of the lamb's fleece sharply defined." The second specimen was lot 2018 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €420 (about US$585 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"NÜRNBERG, STADT, 1/4 Dukatenklippe o. J. (1700). Lammprägung. GOLD. Fast Stempelglanz. (Germany, city of Nuremberg, undated quarter ducat klippe, Paschal lamb. About uncirculated.)"
This type was struck starting in 1700 and tho not cheap, is more available than other Nurnberger ducats of the eighteenth century. Fractional ducats including 1/2, 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32 were also issued. This German type frequently appears in choice uncirculated, adding to its popularity.
