Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 57802

This specimen was lot 57802 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description^[1] noted, "SPAIN. Noven, ND (1252-84)-L. Leon Mint. Alfonso X. NGC MS-61." Alfonso X, dubbed "the Wise" for his dabblings in law and astronomy, was king of Leon and Castile 1252-84. His last years were harassed by a civil war with his son, Sancho IV. This coin was called a noven because it was worth nine dineros. It was minted at Leon (shown here), Cuenca, Coruña, Seville, Burgos and Toledo. The mintmark "L" is below the castle.
