Stack's Bowers 2026 NYINC sale, lot 49359

This specimen was lot 49359 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $264. The catalog description^[1] noted, "SPAIN. Kingdom of Castille & Leon. Noven, ND (1252-84)-B. Burgos Mint. Alfonso X. NGC MS-64. Tied for finest certified with two other examples on the NGC population report. From the Kyle Ponterio Collection." Alfonso X, dubbed "the Wise" for his dabblings in law and astronomy, was king of Leon and Castile 1252-84. His last years were harassed by a civil war with his son, Sancho IV. This coin was called a noven because it was worth nine dineros. It was minted at Leon, Cuenca, Coruña, Seville, Burgos (shown here) and Toledo. The mintmark "B" is below the castle.
