This copper-nickel two centavos was minted in Santiago, Chile, in 1870-77. It was converted to copper in 1878 (KM 147a) and struck in that form until 1894. A slightly larger 2½ centavos was issued beginning in 1886. The type is not rare but most survivors are in poor condition. This specimen is a somewhat better date; there also exists a rare overdate, 1876/5. The second specimen was lot 70335 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $1,680, which was 14 times the estimate. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 2 Centavos, 1876. PCGS MS-65 Gold Shield. KM-147. A well-struck Gem with satiny luster and pleasant toning throughout."

Recorded mintage: 108,000.

Specification: copper-nickel, plain edge.

Catalog reference: KM 147.
