Sincona sale 77, lot 2845

This specimen was lot 2845 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 12,500 CHF (about US$15,173 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"THE NETHERLANDS | Kingdom of the Netherlands. Wilhelm II. 1840-1849. 10 Gulden 1848, Utrecht. Proof. Negotiepenning. Sehr selten. Nur 500 Exemplare geprägt. NGC PF61 CAMEO. Prachtexemplar. (kingdom of the Netherlands, William II, 1840-49, ten gulden of 1848, Utrecht mint, proof. Very rare. Only 500 pieces struck, Cabinet piece.)"

This gold ten gulden was struck in such small quantities as to be a pattern. It was accompanied by gold twenty gulden (Fr-335) and five golden (Fr-337), also very rare. Subsequent ten gulden struck during the reign of William III (Fr-340) are also rare but a tiny bit more available.
