Aureo sale 269, lot 630

This specimen was lot 630 in Aureo sale 269 (Barcelona, July 2015), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,680/ including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"* 1990. Cuba. 50 pesos. AU. V Centenario - Cristóbal Colón. Con certificado. Acuñación de 250 piezas. Proof. (Cuba, gold fifty pesos of 1990, for the fifth centennial of Christopher Columbus, with certificate, mintage of 250 pieces, proof.)"

This type is listed in the SCWC but without a photo. Desperate for foreign exchange, Cuba has issued large numbers of NCLT's, many only vaguely related to Cuba. This type was accompanied by a gold five hundred pesos (Fr-43) and hundred pesos (Fr-45).

Recorded mintage: 250, all proof.

Specification: 15.55 g, 0.999 fine gold, this specimen 15,55 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-46, KM 298.
