G128-1720r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1720 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. ½ Teston a la couronnelle, Undated. Lyon mint. Francis I, 1515-1547. Crowned bust right. Reverse: Crowned shield, flanked by crowned F's. Sharply struck example with original underlying luster with a lovely old multi color cabinet tone. The only one graded at PCGS. PCGS graded MS-62." This is a demi-teston of the 13th type, struck at Dijon, Lyon and Troyes only. In 1540, the Lyon mint was assigned the mintmark "D" and the secret points were gradually abandoned.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.799 g, .899 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dupl-811; Ciani-1129.
