The area of Zimbabwe was originally a mineral-rich trading center that had connections with Portuguese and probably Arab traders. After European settlement, it was named the Republic of [[Southern Rhodesia]] (1895), and through a series of negotiations with the British government and efforts at independence, became fully indedependent as Zimbabwe in 1980.

Zimbabwe coinage has remained unchanged since 1980. However, due to recent hyperinflation, the denominations of the coins are no longer relevant or useful in daily commerce.
