This specimen was lot 1513 in Sincona sale 47 (Zurich, May 2018), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$780 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''GERMANY, Würzburg, Bistum, Franz Ludwig von Erthal, 1779-1795. Taler 1791, Würzburg. . Vorzüglich.'' (bishopric of Wurzburg, Francis Louis of Erthal, 1779-95, thaler of 1791, Wurzburg mint. Extremely fine.)"</blockquote> This type is listed in the SCWC as a three year type but is actually fairly scarce. The bishopric of Wurzburg was an ecclesiastical state north of Bavaria and south of Thuringia whose rulers issued thalers fairly steadily during the eighteenth century. The bishopric was secularized in 1803 and given to Bavaria by Napoleon, which region it is still a part.
