This specimen was lot 6634 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,701 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"WÜRTTEMBERG, HERZOGTUM, Karl Alexander, 1733-1737. 1/2 Karolin 1735, Stuttgart. GOLD. Fast vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Wurttemberg, Charles Alexander, 1733-37, half carolin d'or of 1735, Stuttgart mint. about extremely fine.)"</blockquote> The carolin d'or, introduced in the 1730's along with the Bavarian maximilian d'or, established the vogue for self-titled gold coins inspired by the French louis d'or. The duke of Wurttemberg also issued half (shown here, struck 1734-36) and quarter carolins. Enough have survived that collectively they are the most common Wurttemberger gold coin of the eighteenth century.
