This specimen was lot 23129 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $480. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "ITALY. [[Italy, Venice|Venice]]. Ducato, ND (1773-74)-GP. Alvise Mocenigo IV. PCGS AU-50 Gold Shield. A richly detailed coin with uniform, gun metal toning throughout and no field marks to speak of." The Duchy of Venice was actually an oligarchy nominally ruled by an elected doge. Venetian independence was terminated by the Napoleonic invasions and the area fell to Austria in 1797. This type was struck 1763-78. Initials GP stand for Giacomo Pasqualigo. As he served only for the period 1773-74, that limits the time during which this coin was minted.
