The name 'Republica de Venezuela' replaced 'Estados Unidos de Venezuela' on all coinage from 1953. Bolivar fractionals and multipules continued to be silver until 1964, at which point they became nickel in composition.

Shown is a 1985 50 centimos, composition nickel, minted in Ontario. The obverse features the portait of Simon Bolivar, recognized as liberator of the Venezuelans from rule by the Spanish. The portrait was designed by Albert Barre in Paris. The reverse features the coat of arms, denomination, and date.
