This type was issued in Valencia 1706-07 on behalf of the Austrian archduke Charles, who as Charles III contended unsuccessfully with Philip V for the throne of [[Spain]]. The bottom of the obverse legend "CAROLVS III" can just be made out and the reverse is double struck. It is rather obscure which likely accounts for its low catalog value. The croat was a denomination popular in Valencia and Catalonia and equaled one real in the rest of Spain.
