This specimen was lot 20553 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Spain|SPAIN]]. [[Coinage of Valencia|Valencia]]. Corona, ND (1516-56). Charles I. PCGS Genuine--Filed Rims, AU Details Gold Shield. Obverse: Cross potent, with inward-facing floral scrolls in each angle; Reverse: Crowned coat-of-arms. Quite well struck, this hammered issue features great luster and brilliance, with the details designation merely emanating from some minor edge filing--quite possibly from use in jewelry. RARE, especially when encountered this pleasing and robust. Ex: Stack's (1/2008) Lot # 3334. Ex: Lanz 118 (11/2003) Lot # 587." Altho Spain was theoretically unified under Carlos I, many regions, including Valencia, continued to issue their own coinage. As with many issues of this reign, the dies were hand cut and many varieties exist. We have assigned this example to Cayón-3244 because of the cross potent at the top of the reverse and because of the quadrilobe decorations by the main arms of Valencia.
