This specimen was lot 23261 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $690. The catalog description[1] noted, "[[Mexico|MEXICO]]. Tuxtla. 1/4 Real, 1838. NGC MS-64 Red Brown. Non-circulating fantasy coinage. A lustrous coin with slight magenta tint." Tuxtla is the capital of the state of Chiapas. The obverse legend, "CANTON DE TUXTLA", suggests a European origin for this piece, as Tuxtla is a municipality, not a canton. Locally made municipal tokens exist in many varieties but are nearly always crudely struck.
