This specimen was lot 41620 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Thailand|THAILAND]]. Salung (1/4 Baht), ND (1876-1910). Rama V. NGC Proof Details--Harshly Cleaned. EXTREMELY RARE in proof quality, this enticing specimen does exhibit some noted cleaning, though it does not appear to be as extreme as the classification of harsh. A hint of golden toning is now evident near the peripheries on the reverse." The early coinage of Thailand, or Siam, is a confusing mix of atts, fuangs, salungs and bahts. In 1908, the system was simplified to 100 satang = one baht. This undated type is common but scarce nice. Rama V is the potentate starring (some say mocked) in the musical "The King and I."
