(This example from the Sven Svensson Collection, Hirsch Coin Auction 1, Stockholm 1966, No. 157 and Gunnar Ekström Collection, Ahlström Auction 12, Stockholm 1976, No. 5. Acquired in 1992 from Claes-Olof Algård, Vancouver. The 1534 daler with a bust of the king, holding a sword over his shoulder, is one of the classic rarities of Swedish numismatics. The type is the earliest of the dalers with a slightly smaller diameter, and only one set of dies was used for the minting. Consequently, it is very rare, which is also due to the fact that the 1534 daler denominations largely disappeared abroad. The ongoing war against Lübeck and the supporters of the deposed Christian II – the so-called Counts' Feud – entailed great costs, partly in the form of pay for the mercenaries, and partly in the form of support for Gustav Vasa's Danish ally, the future King Christian III. The surviving source material contains information about large payments in dalers for both of these purposes. Only six specimens of this type coin have survived to this day, of which three are in private ownership. The other two privately owned specimens are from the Virgil Brand <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">cvollection</del>, sold in 1982 in Zurich and probably originating from the Israel Berghmans collection, and the specimen that was last sold at Nordlind's auction on 26/11 2006, lot 70.)</p></blockquote> Daveport records four different dalers for 1534: Dav-8691 (standing figure of the king, wearing a cap), Dav-8692 (standing figure of the king, wearing a crown), Dav-8693 (small caped bust, shown here) and Dav-8694 (large caped bust). All are rare. Gustav Vasa is considered the father of Sweden, having led her permanent separation from Denmark.

+

The other two privately owned specimens are from the Virgil Brand cvollection, sold in 1982 in Zurich and probably originating from the Israel Berghmans collection, and the specimen that was last sold at Nordlind's auction on 26/11 2006, lot 70.)</p></blockquote> Daveport records four different dalers for 1534: Dav-8691 (standing figure of the king, wearing a cap), Dav-8692 (standing figure of the king, wearing a crown), Dav-8693 (small caped bust, shown here) and Dav-8694 (large caped bust). All are rare. Gustav Vasa is considered the father of Sweden, having led her permanent separation from Denmark.
