This fifty escudos, minted in Lisbon for the Portuguese colony of Sao Tomé e Principe, is the only issue of this denomination. It commemorated the 500th anniversary of colonization, an event more likely mourned by the locals. The coin is fairly common despite the small mintage. The colony, originally a slave trading station, later turned to sugar production and finally cacao. The Portuguese withdrew in 1975.&lt;br /&gt;
