Ceylon was colonized successively by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British. The British were the first to conquer the interior and rule the whole island. Ceylon received her independence in 1948 when the British left India. In 1972, Ceylon dropped its membership in the British Commonwealth and changed its name to Sri Lanka, which name is still in use. The nation has been torn by conflicts between Tamils and the majority Sinhalese. This type was struck in 1975 and 1978. As of August 2019, US$1 = 180 rupees, rendering the smaller denominations worthless.<br />
