The specimen shown was lot 345 in Aureo y Calico sale 233 (Barcelona, April 2011), where it sold for 200 euros (about US$333 including buyer's fee). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''1841. Barcelona. PS. 4 reales. Parte de brillo original. Bella. Rara así. EBC.'' (Four reales de vellon, 1841, Barcelona mint. Handsome, some mint luster, rare thus, extremely fine.)</blockquote> The "de vellon" coinage system, used in [[Spain]] 1808-50, set 20 reales = 1 peso instead of the traditional eight. The coins minted using that standard were not marked in any way different from the concurrent eight reales standard, a source of confusion for collectors today. It must have been a major irritant for the inhabitants of the time. The type was struck 1838-49 at Barcelona, Madrid and Seville.
