-This Spanish two escudos was struck at the Madrid mint in 1814. The type was struck 1814-33 after Feredinand VII was restored as king of [[Spain]]. Unlike the Latin American mints which concentrated on eight escudos, the most common Spanish gold coins of the period were the half escudo and two escudos. Production of the standard bust two escudos resumed at Madrid 1814-33. Two other assayers are listed for 1813, IG and IJ, both rarer than the GJ shown here. This specimen was lot 25834 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $4,700. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Ferdinand VII gold 2 Escudos 1814-GJ Madrid, MS66 NGC, laureate bust, an incredibly choice piece with full blazing mint brilliance and superb, nearly pristine surfaces. Certainly among the finest known for the type." The second specimen was lot 34257 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $2,100. The catalog description<sup>[2]</sup> noted, "[[Spain|SPAIN]]. 2 Escudos, 1814/3-M GJ. Madrid Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC MS-63. Seemingly conservatively graded, this charming type, which displays Ferdinand VII in military uniform, exhibits sharp detailing on both sides with a reverse that is pristine and an obverse that shows no major handling. Sparking luster emboldens the appearance further and ensures the quality. A great type, and with only one graded finer, a coin that is sure to appeal to those obsessed with quality. From the Avrabanel Collection." This overdate is not mentioned in the SCWC.
