This specimen was lot 25592 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $4,025. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Carlos IIII gold 8 Escudos 1802-FA Madrid, MS62 NGC, a choice mint state example with bold design features and full mint brilliance. Very attractive and elusive in this select quality." This type was struck 1790-91 and 1802-05 and like all [[Spain|Spanish]] eight escudos as distinct from Spanish [[Chile 1802-So JJ 8 escudos|colonial eight escudos]], is very rare. It is distinguished by earlier issues of Charles III (1773-84) by being only .875 fine instead of .901 fine gold.
