This specimen was lot 72235 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "[[Spain|SPAIN]]. Cob 4 Reales, 1617-To V. Toledo Mint. Philip III. PCGS EF-45. This Toledo 4 Reales piece offers great eye appeal. The obverse displays a bold mintmark and assayer, and, while the denomination is partially muddled, nearly the entire monarch's name and ordinal are shown clearly on the outer legend. The reverse is no less impressive, with most of the outer legend intact. The words "HISPANI... REX" are boldly legible, along with the complete date. The central castles and lions are partly flat and doubled, but overall well-detailed and attractive. The coin has wholesome surfaces with traces of luster and light argent toning. A lovely example of the type. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Privately purchased from Mike Dunigan." This type was struck at Toledo 1602 and 1609-21. Other mints striking four reales during the reign of Philip II include Valladolid, Granada, [[Spain 1621-Seg A+ 4 reales|Segovia]], [[Spain 1620-S G 8 reales|Seville]] and [[Spain 1620-MD Go 4 reales|Madrid]]. Cayón shows two varieties for this date; one with the assayer "V" below the mintmark (shown here) and another with the assayer above.
