This specimen was lot 1318 in Goldberg sale 116 (Los Angeles, June 2020), where it sold for $1,770. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[South Africa]]. Krugerrand, 1983. Bust of Paul Kruger left. Reverse; Springbok. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated." The krugerrand was introduced by the South African government in 1967 as a way of marketing the gold produced from her mines. It peaked in popularity 1974-84 when it was virtually had the bullion market to itself. The introduction of the maple leaf (Canada), the libertad (Mexico), the panda (China), the nugget (Australia) and above all the gold eagle (United States) cut into its market share. It is still in production but not in its former numbers.
