This specimen was part of lot 5945 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €420 (about US$543 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''SÜDAFRIKA, Republik seit 1960. 1 Rand 1971, 1972. Insgesamt 7,32 g Feingold. GOLD. 2 Stück., Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz.'' (republic of South Africa, since 1960, one rand of 1971 and 1972. Two pieces, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"</blockquote> In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeek. This type was issued 1961-83 along with a [[South Africa 1968 2 rand|gold two rand]], minted to the standard of a sovereign. Sold to collectors and bullion speculators, this type never achieved the popularity of the krugerrand introduced in 1967.
