This specimen was part of lot 5943 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €850 (about US$1,098 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''SÜDAFRIKA, Republik seit 1960. 2 Rand 1962, 1966. Insgesamt 14,66 g Feingold. GOLD. 2 Stück., Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz.'' (republic of [[South Africa]], since 1960, two rand of 1962 and 1966. Two pieces, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"</blockquote> In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeek. This type was issued 1961-83 along with a [[South Africa 1963 rand Fr-12|gold one rand]], minted to the standard of a half sovereign. Sold to collectors and bullion speculators, this type never achieved the popularity of the krugerrand introduced in 1967.
